A semisynthetic, third-generation, broad-spectrum cephalosporin antibiotic, which is administered to cattle and swine for control of bacterial infections of the respiratory tract, with additional action against foot rot and acute metritis in cattle. It has a wide spectrum of activity against both gram positive and gram negative bacteria. It exerts its antibacterial action by inhibition of cell wall synthesis. Ceftiofur is mainly excreted in urine and feces.

Treatment of the bacterial component of acute post-partum (puerperal) metritis within 10 days after calving associated with Escherichia coli, Trueperella pyogenes (formerly Arcanobacterium pyogenes) and Fusobacterium necrophorum, susceptible to ceftiofur, where treatment with another antimicrobial has failed.

Pigs: Intramuscular use.
3 mg ceftiofur/kg bw/day for 3 consecutive days, equivalent to 1 ml veterinary medicinal
product/16 kg bw at each injection.
The maximum volume at injection site should be 5.4 ml.
Cattle: Subcutaneous use.
Pigs (meat and offal): 5 days. Cattle (meat and offal): 6 days; cattle (milk): zero days.
