Active Substances

Each ml contains: ceftiofur (hydrochloride) 50 mg.

Description

A semisynthetic, third-generation, broad-spectrum cephalosporin antibiotic, which is administered to cattle and swine for control of bacterial infections of the respiratory tract, with additional action against foot rot and acute metritis in cattle. It has a wide spectrum of activity against both gram positive and gram negative bacteria. It exerts its antibacterial action by inhibition of cell wall synthesis. Ceftiofur is mainly excreted in urine and feces.

Usage

Pigs:

  • Treatment of bacterial respiratory disease associated with Pasteurella multocida, Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae and Streptococcus suis.

Cattle:

  • Treatment of bacterial respiratory disease associated with Mannheimia haemolytica (formerly Pasteurella haemolytica), Pasteurella multocida and Histophilus somni (formerly Haemophilus somnus).
  • Treatment of acute interdigital necrobacillosis – panaritium or foot rot - associated with Fusobacterium necrophorum and Porphyromonas asaccharolytica (formerly Bacteroides melaninogenicus).

Treatment of the bacterial component of acute post-partum (puerperal) metritis within 10 days after calving associated with Escherichia coli, Trueperella pyogenes (formerly Arcanobacterium pyogenes) and Fusobacterium necrophorum, susceptible to ceftiofur, where treatment with another antimicrobial has failed.

Target Species

cattle and pigs.

Dosage

Pigs: Intramuscular use.

3 mg ceftiofur/kg bw/day for 3 consecutive days, equivalent to 1 ml veterinary medicinal

product/16 kg bw at each injection. 

The maximum volume at injection site should be 5.4 ml.

Cattle: Subcutaneous use.

  • Respiratory disease: 1 mg ceftiofur /kg bw/day for 3 to 5 consecutive days, equivalent to 1 ml veterinary medicinal product/50 kg bw.
  • Acute interdigital necrobacillosis: 1 mg ceftiofur/kg bw/day for 3 consecutive days, equivalent to 1 ml veterinary medicinal product/50 kg bw.
  • Acute post-partum metritis within 10 days after calving: 1 mg ceftiofur/kg bw/day for 5 consecutive days, equivalent to 1 ml veterinary medicinal product/50 kg bw.
  • In case of acute post-partum metritis, additional supportive therapy might be required in some cases.


Withdrawal Period

Pigs (meat and offal): 5 days. Cattle (meat and offal): 6 days; cattle (milk): zero days.
